About Szczecin
Szczecin (population 400 000), is the capital of West Pomeranian province in NW Poland. A fortress and the largest Pomeranian town as early as the 12th century, it was until 1637 the residence of the dukes of Pomerania and an important member of the Hanseatic League. At the Peace of Westphalia (1648) it passed to Sweden, but at the end of the Northern War, Sweden ceded it to Prussia. During World War II the city suffered heavy damage from repeated bombings. Now a seat of higher education, Szczecin is home to 17 academic centres that service some 70,000 students. The largest are Szczecin University, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Pomeranian Medical University and Szczecin Maritime University.
